Why You Shouldn’t Be Using Your Personal Email

Recently, I contacted a lawyer I saw online. I was really interested in hiring him, until he emailed me. What could have gone wrong in that small amount of interaction? Well, when I saw his email it was through his personal account. It didn’t sit well with me for some reason. It in a way built a predisposition about his work. Something as small of a detail as an email address had already transformed my perception and made me think twice. An email address and how many email addresses you have is a big deal. Do not throw all of your hard work away with a diminutive detail as an email address is. So, in honor of our natural judgmental ways, let’s explore the advantages of a business email.

Building credibility

It all boils down to presenting your business as professional as possible when you are not around to stick up for it. By an email address alone a person can infer many things. Let your email speak for its self.

For instance, if your email looks something like “[email protected]” it is time for a little cleaning up to do. Emails like “[email protected]” are also hard to read.

Godaddy.com weighs in, “Like it or not, prejudices exist around email addresses. Although, an AOL address might functionally be working well for you, it can make you look “behind the times,” and appear less established and less serious about your business.”

It’s more organized

Having a customized email address tailored to your business needs can give you a lot of flexibility. Yola.com explains, “For instance, when selecting your custom email address, you can select email aliases for various departments such as [email protected] or [email protected] This provides more clarity to your customers when they communicate with you as opposed to routing all communications to one free email address. Email aliases will also direct to one inbox so that you can read and reply to all emails through the appropriate alias as well as categories inquiries.”

It builds a brand

Part of establishing credibility is creating a business identity. Godaddy suggests, “Build your business identity. Put your company name in front of customers, prospects, suppliers, vendors and partners with every email you send. When your email address is your company name, you’re marketing your business with every email you send.” Having this type of email helps people remember you. It makes you memorable when it comes to your customers’ inbox. It helps people weed out the trash emails and with your company’s name ending that email address, they will know exactly who you are.

It may not be free, but it is worth it!
