Did you know that about 10% of the US population has a genuine fear of the notorious number thirteen? Even more specifically they fear thirteen when it falls on a Friday. This is known as paraskevidekatriaphobia, which results in financial losses exceeding $800 million annually. Those that fear thirteen will avoid committing plans for any major life event. Like getting tattooed, getting married, traveling or in the most severe cases, going to work. But, how did this numerical superstition get started?
According to an article written by History Channels Barbara Maranzani entitled “What’s so unlucky about the number thirteen?”, the superstition all began around an early myth surrounding the origin of the fear involving one of the world’s oldest legal documents, the Code of Hammurabi. These ancient documents reportedly omitted a 13th law from its list of legal rules. In truth, the omission was simply a clerical error that was made by one of the document’s earliest translators who failed to include a line of text. In point of fact, the code doesn’t actually numerically list it’s laws at all.
Maranzani goes on to explain that the fears surrounding the number 13 are primarily a Western construct. So, is the number 13 lucky in other cultures? Absolutely! Cultures, like the ancient Egyptians, considered the number thirteen to be very lucky. It seems rather silly that from someone else’s editing error our number thirteen catches such a bad rep.
